As a long time Sandford fan, I was excited to read a novel that brought Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers together, with both as main characters. Ocean Prey begins with the murder of Coast Guardsmen and with the stalled FBI investigation into those killings. When Lucas identifies a group of smugglers dropping heroin into the Florida waters, he brings Virgil in to go undercover with the criminal gang. Sandford deftly changes the focus in alternating chapters, keeping the pacing lively and the tension high. He does cop humor better than anyone since Joe Wambaugh, and Ocean Prey will only add to his reputation as one of the best thriller writers around. Highly recommended.
