Miss Memory Lane: A Memoir by Colton Haynes

A brutally honest and moving memoir of lust, abuse, addiction, stardom, and redemption from Arrow and Teen Wolf actor Colton Haynes. Four years ago, Colton Haynes woke up in a hospital. He’d had two seizures, lost the sight in one eye, almost ruptured a kidney, and been put on an involuntary psychiatry hold. Not yet thirty, he knew he had to take stock of his life and make some serious changes if he wanted to see his next birthday. As he worked towards sobriety, Haynes allowed himself to become vulnerable for the first time in years and with that, discovered profound self-awareness. He had millions of social media followers who constantly told him they loved him. But what would they think if they knew his true story? If they knew where he came from and the things he had done? Now, Colton bravely pulls back the curtain on his life and career, revealing the incredible highs and devastating lows. From his unorthodox childhood in a small Kansas town, to coming to terms with his sexuality, he keeps nothing back. By sixteen, he had been signed by the world’s top modeling agency and his face appeared on billboards. But he was still a broke, lonely, confused teenager, surrounded by people telling him he could be a star as long as he never let anyone see his true self. As his career in television took off, the stress of wearing so many masks and trying to please so many different people turned his use of drugs and alcohol into full-blown addiction. A lyrical and intimate confession, apology, and cautionary tale, Miss Memory Lane is an unforgettable story of dreams deferred and dreams fulfilled; of a family torn apart and rebuilt; and of a man stepping into the light as no one but himself. I finally finished reading Miss Memory Lane by Colton Haynes and I loved it. It's a memoir with a collection of memories that covers almost all of Colton's life, from childhood to the present. And he really gets into more than a few highly emotional scenes from his childhood. He doesn't hold back. Aside from the fact that Colton talks about his family, his friends, and a few of the people who have influenced him in his life, I couldn't help but read this book from a gay POV. His emotional struggle about coming out as gay, and the serious events that led up to this had me stunned half the time. I know, from my own experience, that coming out for any gay man is never easy, but it's particularly difficult if you're living in the spotlight like Colton. He actually had to come twice in a lifetime, which most of us don't have to do. He came out to his family and friends at one point, and then years later he came out to the public. That's not easy. I think there are certain aspects with regard to being gay that almost every gay man can relate to in this book. First, there are the eating issues I think many gay men face. I know I've always had to deal with them. I haven't had a carb in 10 years. I also found it uncanny the way I could relate to so much, with so much connection. Colton talks about places like Loma Linda, which is something close to me. He talks about Hemet, CA, which is the way I get to Idyllwild. He even mentions Palm Springs and the wind turbines. I live in Palm Springs and my back view is the desert, the chocolate mountains, Desert Hot Springs, and the wind turbines. But I digress. This book is truly a 5-star deal because it's so authentic and bold. Colton even talks about sex at certain points in the book and I could relate to most of it. Not all, but most. At one point in his life, he worked on those sex phone lines. We actually owned one of those sex phone lines in the 90s. When you're a gay man no one sits you down and explains anything to you about sex. You learn everything there to know about sex and even relationships all alone. And trust me, just like Colton mentions in the book, you make plenty of mistakes. At certain points in the book, you can feel the fear and the shame that Colton experienced. You'll find yourself feeling sorry for him at certain points and then cheering him on at other points. He's still very young and it's amazing what he's accomplished in such a short time. I just hope that Hollywood gives him a break and hires him for more openly gay roles instead of the straight actors they usually hire. To sum all this up. I would recommend this book to anyone, gay or straight. In fact, this book should be required reading for all straight people so they understand what it's like and that everything they saw on Will and his Grace was fiction. It's also extremely well written in the sense that it's tight and professional. There are no flowery ridiculous words that you find in most romance novels, and there was nothing that annoyed me. As an author, I look for certain things and I didn't see any of the usual amateur mistakes that I usually find in books like this. Here's the link to Amazon. I read the e-book on my phone but I think there's a sale going on right now with the print book.
